Stellaris: Cosmic Storms

From the steam page:

Cosmic Storms is a Mechanical Expansion for Stellaris where the skies teem with eight new storm types filled with peril and promise. From Electric Storms harnessing the power of lightning to the formidable Nexus Storm, a galactic tempest of unparalleled magnitude, these natural phenomena challenge you to make skillful choices to steer your empire safely and profitably through the chaos.

team

I was part of a team at Behaviour Interactive where we developed Cosmic Storms in collaboration with Paradox Interactive. The Behaviour team was responsible for the design and implementation of the full expansion, with the Stellaris team at Paradox providing direction, feedback and quality assurance.

contributions

Until the expansion’s release I cannot go into detail on what features I worked on, so I’ll instead give a brief top level description. The majority of my work on Cosmic Storms was related to the narrative content. Stellaris uses Paradox’s Clausewitz engine, written in C++, as well as it’s own integrated scripting language used to for the design and implementation of content. I worked in tight collaboration with our narrative designers to implement the “precursor” and origin quest lines into the expansion. The majority of that work happened using the scripting language, with occasional forays into the engine itself to add new functionality needed for the narrative content.

Stellaris: Cosmic Storms is scheduled to release on the 10th of September, 2024!
